India has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining an independent and friendly relationship with Bangladesh, emphasizing that the bilateral ties between the two nations are driven by mutual interests and are not influenced by Dhaka’s relations with other countries. Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs in India, made these remarks during a weekly media briefing on Friday, January 24.
Jaiswal stated that India views its relationship with Bangladesh as a cornerstone of regional cooperation and prosperity. He underlined that New Delhi seeks to foster a partnership based on democracy, progressiveness, and inclusivity. He added that the aim is to develop bilateral ties in a manner that benefits the people of both countries.
The spokesperson stressed that India's perspective on its relationship with Bangladesh is independent of Bangladesh’s engagements with other nations. His comments came in response to a question regarding recent improvements in relations between Bangladesh and Pakistan.
He also highlighted that India closely monitors developments in the region that have implications for its national security. "We observe all regional events and take appropriate measures to ensure our security," Jaiswal stated.
Addressing the topic of fencing along the Bangladesh-India border, Jaiswal mentioned that there is an understanding between the two countries regarding the need to secure the border. He expressed hope that Bangladesh would approach the matter constructively. He stressed that the implementation of the mutual agreement on border fencing is essential for both sides.
When asked about the upcoming Border Security Force (BSF) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Director General-level talks in New Delhi, Jaiswal confirmed that discussions on the proposed meeting have taken place. However, he noted that the date for the meeting has not yet been finalized.
India reiterated its long-standing commitment to fostering strong ties with Bangladesh, based on trust and cooperation, with a vision to uphold regional peace and development.
