Over the past decade, Bangladeshi citizens living along the Indian border have faced severe and recurring violence allegedly perpetrated by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF). According to a report from the human rights organization Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK), these incidents often occur under the pretexts of "illegal trespassing" and "smuggling." The violence has resulted in hundreds of deaths and countless cases of abductions and physical abuse.

The ASK report highlights that in the last 11 years, BSF personnel have killed 289 Bangladeshis by gunfire alone. While shootings represent the majority of these fatalities, beatings and high-speed pursuits also contribute to the toll. Between 2018 and 2024, the BSF reportedly beat 28 Bangladeshi citizens to death. Additionally, from 2021 to 2024, six individuals lost their lives during high-stakes chases in border areas, as they fled from pursuing BSF officers.

Abductions by BSF are another critical issue, with 319 cases recorded over the last 11 years. Many of these individuals were reportedly taken while engaged in everyday activities such as harvesting crops, herding cattle, fishing, or performing household chores near the border. The fate of those abducted remains largely unknown. In some cases, the abductees have never been seen again, leaving families and communities in anguish.

ASK's data for the past four years (2021–2024) reveals that out of 17 Bangladeshis abducted by the BSF, only seven have been returned. The remaining ten remain unaccounted for, underscoring a grim trend of disappearances that has compounded the fears of those living near the border.

The violence and uncertainty in border regions have left local residents in a state of persistent vulnerability. The incidents, as documented by ASK, shed light on a disturbing reality faced by border communities, calling for increased accountability and cooperation between the two neighboring countries to prevent further loss of life and ensure the safety of civilians.
