Dhaka, January 29 – Mohammad Rakib, a third-year chemistry student at Dhaka College, has put forward five demands following the recent clash between students of Dhaka University and its affiliated seven colleges. Rakib, who was injured in the violent confrontation on January 26 at Nilkhet, is also the central coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
Speaking at a press conference from his cabin in Dhaka Medical College Hospital at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, Rakib detailed his demands, calling for strict action against those responsible for the incident.
According to Rakib, the attack was premeditated, and those in charge of maintaining law and order not only failed in their duty but actively participated in the violence. He demanded the permanent removal of all senior officials and personnel who either orchestrated or led the attack on the students. He alleged that a calculated attempt was made to destabilize the situation and suppress student voices.
He also called for the immediate dismissal of Dhaka University Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed, whom he accused of misconduct that led to the escalation of violence. Rakib claimed that Dr. Ahmed's inappropriate behavior incited tensions, resulting in injuries to students.
Rakib further alleged that certain law enforcement officials and senior administrators loyal to the ruling party had conspired to launch a violent attack on students with the intent to cause serious harm. He demanded that within 24 hours, those responsible be identified, brought under legal scrutiny, and subjected to appropriate punishment.
Expressing concern over the education of students currently enrolled under Dhaka University’s academic jurisdiction, Rakib urged the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the government to ensure that their academic activities remain unaffected by the ongoing tensions. He emphasized that no obstacles should be placed in the way of their education, as the uncertainty surrounding their academic future has been a longstanding issue.
Lastly, he called on the government to take immediate steps to establish a separate university framework for the seven affiliated colleges. He stressed that students have long been demanding an independent structure for their institutions and that their concerns must now be addressed without further delay.
The press conference was attended by fellow students and activists supporting Rakib’s demands. His statements have sparked renewed discussions among student communities and academic authorities regarding the ongoing tensions between Dhaka University and its affiliated colleges.
