Shafiqul Alam, the Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, announced that the country could hold elections by December of this year if political parties do not demand extensive reforms. However, if more significant reforms are sought, the election timeline may extend by an additional six months. He shared these insights while addressing journalists at an event organized by the Krishibid Institution Bangladesh (KIB) on Tuesday, January 7.
In his statement, Alam explained that the interim government has already presented a roadmap to the nation. This roadmap, he asserted, has successfully created a sense of anticipation and public optimism across the country. “We have set two possible timelines. If political parties are satisfied with minimal reforms, elections can take place by December. If they push for broader reforms, we may need an extra six months to accommodate those changes,” he said.
Alam emphasized the interim government’s efforts to stabilize the nation after a period of uncertainty. He highlighted notable economic achievements, stating, “When the interim government assumed office, the country's economy faced significant challenges. Despite this, we have not only restored stability but also exceeded expectations. For instance, the foreign currency reserve, which was initially projected to be $20 billion, now stands at $22 billion, demonstrating the government's effective measures.”
He further reflected on the public sentiment following the transition of power. According to Alam, the fall of the previous Awami League government and the subsequent installation of the interim government had sparked heightened aspirations among citizens. “The interim administration has been working diligently to meet these expectations,” he added.
To enhance transparency and communication, Alam mentioned the establishment of a dedicated WhatsApp group by the Press Wing, which aims to keep the public informed about government activities. “Anyone interested in joining the group is being added. Through this platform, we are ensuring that all government initiatives and progress updates are accessible to the people,” he explained.
Concluding his address, Alam reiterated the interim government’s commitment to maintaining stability and fostering economic growth while preparing the groundwork for free and fair elections. The proposed timeline for elections, he emphasized, would ultimately depend on the extent of reforms demanded by the political parties involved.
