The interim government has no intention of banning the Awami League, clarified Shafiqul Alam, the Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser of the caretaker government. Speaking to journalists after the first day of a two-day workshop organized by the Bangladesh Agricultural Journalists Forum (BAJF) on Sunday, he emphasized that while individuals involved in bloodshed will face justice, the government has not included banning the party in its agenda. The ultimate decision on the Awami League’s political future, he noted, lies with the country's political parties.

According to Alam, the lack of remorse among Awami League leaders is concerning. However, he stressed that the government would not take steps to outlaw the party unilaterally. He dismissed claims of immediate actions against the Awami League’s existence, indicating that such matters would require broader political consensus.

During the conversation, the press secretary criticized Sheikh Hasina, the leader of the Awami League, accusing her of consistently spreading misinformation. "She has been perpetuating lies for years, starting from her early morning prayers. This trend has not changed," Alam alleged. He further claimed that the people of Bangladesh would first ensure justice for the victims of enforced disappearances, killings, and corruption allegedly linked to Hasina and her associates before determining the party's political destiny.

On the issues of election reforms and governance, Alam stated that any decisions would follow consultations with political parties. He mentioned that the Reform Commission's report would be finalized only after discussions with stakeholders. The timeline for elections, he added, would depend on the extent of reforms agreed upon by all parties.

Alam also blamed the previous Awami League government for the current economic challenges faced by the interim administration. According to him, the false data presented during their tenure has left the caretaker government struggling to stabilize markets. "The Awami League claimed years of growth in production, but the reality is far from it," he said, accusing the party of misleading the public for years.

The press secretary’s remarks underline the interim government’s stance on prioritizing accountability and reforms while distancing itself from unilateral political actions.
