The interim government of Bangladesh has decided to rename 13 public universities that were previously named after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her family, including Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. This decision was finalized during a meeting of the Advisory Council on Thursday.
Asif Mahmud, an advisor to the interim government, confirmed the news on his verified social media page. According to his post, Sheikh Hasina University in Netrokona has been renamed Netrokona University, while Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman University in Naogaon has been changed to Naogaon University. Similarly, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman University in Kishoreganj will now be called Kishoreganj University.
Meherpur's Mujibnagar University has been renamed Meherpur University. The Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University in Gazipur is now Gazipur Agricultural University, and the university in Shariatpur with the same name has been renamed Shariatpur Agricultural University.
In addition, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Digital University, Bangladesh, has been renamed Bangladesh Digital University. The Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Science and Technology University in Jamalpur will now be called Jamalpur Science and Technology University. Pirojpur's Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University is now Pirojpur Science and Technology University, while the university in Narayanganj has been renamed Narayanganj Science and Technology University.
Gopalganj’s Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University is now Gopalganj Science and Technology University. The Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Maritime University in Chattogram has been renamed Maritime University Bangladesh, and the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Aviation and Aerospace University will now be called Aviation and Aerospace University Bangladesh.
This renaming initiative reflects the government's intent to emphasize regional identity and inclusivity while aligning the institutions with their respective locations and areas of expertise.
