Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus stated that the interim government’s tenure should be as brief as possible. In an interview with AFP during the COP-29 conference in Baku, Azerbaijan, Dr. Yunus remarked on the necessity for swift reforms before a new government is elected through a democratic vote, following the ousting of authoritarian ruler Sheikh Hasina.
Dr. Yunus, the Nobel Peace Prize-winning economist, highlighted that the speed of these reforms would determine how soon elections could be held. He expressed his commitment to steering the country toward democratic elections, underscoring that “our pledge is to hold elections as soon as we are prepared, allowing the elected representatives to take control of the government.”
The Chief Advisor stressed the urgency for national consensus on potential constitutional reforms, as well as on the structural frameworks of the government, parliament, and electoral regulations. He added, “As an interim government, our mandate should be to serve for as short a time as possible.”
