In a significant development, a court in Kushtia has ordered the arrest and imprisonment of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) President and former Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu in connection with a six-year-old case involving an attack and attempted murder on Mahmudur Rahman, the editor of the daily Amar Desh.
On Sunday (March 9), Inu was produced before Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Mahmuda Sultana’s court in Kushtia. After hearing the case, the court issued the arrest warrant and ordered him to be sent to jail. The case dates back to October 10, 2024, when Mahmudur Rahman filed a complaint at Kushtia Model Police Station, accusing 47 individuals, including Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina (currently in India), former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, Awami League leader Mahbubul Alam Hanif, former Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu, former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Jabed Patwary, Kushtia Superintendent of Police Mehedi Hasan, and Kushtia Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Nasir Uddin, among others. Additionally, 20-30 unidentified individuals were also named in the case.
The court confirmed the arrest and subsequent imprisonment of Inu, who was taken to Kushtia District Jail under tight police security. Court Police Inspector Zahirul Islam stated that the court ordered Inu to be sent to jail after he was produced before the judge.
The case stems from an alleged attack on Mahmudur Rahman six years ago, which was widely reported as an attempt on his life. The court’s decision marks a significant turn in the long-pending case, with further legal proceedings expected to unfold in the coming days.
