An investigative commission comprising seven members has been formed to probe the tragic 2009 mutiny at the Pilkhana headquarters of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), previously known as the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR). The announcement was made on Monday, December 23, during the medal award ceremony held at the BGB Headquarters in Dhaka, marking BGB Day. The declaration came from the Home Affairs Advisor, Lieutenant General (Retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury.
The advisor confirmed that the commission was officially constituted after receiving the Chief Advisor’s approval late on Sunday night. Heading the commission is former BGB Director General A.L.M. Fazlur Rahman, who will oversee the investigation process.
The seven-member commission brings together a multidisciplinary panel to ensure a comprehensive probe into the mutiny that occurred on February 25, 2009. Alongside the chairman, the panel includes two senior members from the armed forces, one professor from Dhaka University, one professor from Jagannath University, a senior official from the police force, and a civil service representative.
The commission’s primary task will be to uncover the causes and circumstances of the mutiny, which led to significant loss of life and raised serious concerns about internal security. Details about the commission’s timeline and procedural approach are expected to be revealed soon.
