Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has called for ensuring justice in the murder case of young Achiya from Magura, in light of the victim’s family expressing dissatisfaction with the verdict. On Saturday, May 17, Dr. Rahman made a public statement via his official Facebook page, reacting to the verdict recently delivered in the tragic case.
He noted that although the legal proceedings concluded within two months and the court has already issued its verdict, Achiya’s family expressed their discontent and announced their intention to appeal to a higher court. Dr. Rahman described this concern as something that warrants attention and careful consideration.
The case involves the abduction, abuse, and subsequent murder of Achiya, a young girl from Magura, which had drawn nationwide attention and outrage. The trial was expedited, and while many lauded the speed of the proceedings, Achiya’s family has voiced concerns over the adequacy of the punishment handed down.
“The people of Bangladesh are waiting to see the killer punished,” wrote Dr. Shafiqur Rahman in his post. He emphasized that swift and exemplary punishment of perpetrators in such cases can serve as a deterrent for others.
In addition to his comments on the Achiya case, the Jamaat chief also raised concern about another tragic incident involving the father of a young girl in Barguna. The girl had reportedly been sexually assaulted, and her father, Montu Chandra Das, was later murdered. Dr. Rahman stressed the need for justice in that case as well, demanding swift and fair legal proceedings.
“We want to see the perpetrators brought to justice in both cases,” he wrote. “Delays in delivering justice or inadequate responses from the legal system only embolden wrongdoers. Swift, fair, and transparent trials are essential to restore faith in the rule of law.”
The verdict in Achiya’s murder case has sparked mixed reactions. While authorities praised the speed of the judicial process, legal experts and activists have also pointed out the importance of ensuring that the fast-track verdicts are not compromised in terms of thoroughness and fairness.
Achiya’s murder had shocked the nation, prompting widespread protests and demands for capital punishment for the accused. Civil society, women’s rights groups, and child protection activists called for systemic reforms to prevent such heinous acts.
Now, with Achiya’s family voicing dissatisfaction and seeking further legal recourse, public attention has again turned to the justice system’s accountability and its ability to deliver on the expectations of victims’ families and the wider society.
Dr. Shafiqur Rahman concluded his statement with a renewed call for justice, stating that ensuring fair trials and meaningful punishment for the guilty is not only a legal obligation but also a moral imperative.
