The party seeks DMP’s permission to hold a mass gathering at Suhrawardy Udyan on June 21, marking its first major rally in the capital since the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government.

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has announced plans to organize a major public rally in the capital city of Dhaka, marking what would be its first significant public gathering since the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government in the wake of the anti-discrimination student and public movement. The party has formally submitted an application to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) requesting permission to hold the event on June 21 at the historic Suhrawardy Udyan.

The announcement was confirmed on Saturday by Advocate Ehsanul Mahbub Zubair, Assistant Secretary General of Jamaat-e-Islami and the head of the party’s Central Media and Publicity Department. In a statement to the media, he said, “We are planning to hold a public rally in Dhaka on June 21 at 2 PM. An application has been submitted to the DMP for the use of Suhrawardy Udyan as the venue.”

According to Zubair, the party leadership is preparing for the event and is awaiting a response regarding venue allocation. He indicated that senior leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami would be present at the rally, and leaders of like-minded political groups would also be invited to participate. He emphasized that the scale and specifics of the rally would depend largely on whether they receive permission to use the proposed venue.

He also noted that preparations are already underway and that further details will be released by the party at a later stage, contingent on the confirmation of logistical arrangements. The rally, if approved, would signal Jamaat-e-Islami’s renewed attempt to assert its presence in national politics following a period of limited visibility amid shifting political dynamics in the country.

This announcement comes at a time of heightened political activity in Bangladesh, where opposition groups are increasingly asserting their agendas and calling for reforms, particularly following recent mass mobilizations centered around demands for equality, justice, and political accountability. Jamaat-e-Islami’s move to organize a large-scale rally in Dhaka is seen as part of a broader strategy to re-engage with the public and consolidate support among its base and potential allies.

Jamaat’s application to the DMP is now under consideration, and the party awaits formal approval before proceeding with final preparations.
