Japan has reiterated its support for Bangladesh’s interim government and expressed a strong commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, particularly in trade and development cooperation.

On Sunday (February 2), Japan’s Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ikuina Akiko, conveyed this message during a meeting with Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus at the state guesthouse, Jamuna, in Dhaka.

During the meeting, Akiko emphasized that Japan highly values its relationship with Bangladesh and remains committed to standing by the country. She stated that the purpose of her visit was to reaffirm Japan’s dedication to supporting Bangladesh and to further solidify bilateral cooperation.

Chief Adviser Yunus described Japan as a close ally and a steadfast partner in Bangladesh’s development. He stressed the significance of strong collaboration between the two nations during this crucial period. He also highlighted that Bangladesh is going through a transformative phase, making this an important time for strengthening ties. Japan is currently Bangladesh’s largest bilateral development partner, having provided consistent and generous support to the country’s social and economic progress for many years.

At present, bilateral trade between the two countries stands at approximately $4 billion, with Japan being one of Bangladesh’s top five export destinations. More than 350 Japanese companies are currently operating in Bangladesh, contributing significantly to the country’s economic landscape.

The Japanese vice-minister inquired about the ongoing reform initiatives undertaken by the interim government, as well as preparations for the upcoming general elections.

Akiko extended an invitation to the Chief Adviser to attend the 30th Nikkei Future of Asia event, scheduled to take place in Tokyo from May 29 to 30. She also invited Professor Yunus, a recipient of the Nikkei Asia Prize in 2004, to participate in Expo 2025 Osaka.

Additionally, she mentioned that the organizers of the Expo would be celebrating Bangladesh Day on May 11, and she expressed her hope that the Chief Adviser’s presence at the event would serve as an inspiration for all attendees.
