Chief Justice Dr. Syed Refat Ahmed has reaffirmed that Bangladesh’s judiciary remains committed to ensuring the highest protection of human rights, a stance that will continue in the future. He made this statement during a courtesy meeting with Spain's Ambassador to Bangladesh, Gabriel Maria Sistiaga Ochoa de Chinchetreu, on Monday, December 2.
During the meeting at the Supreme Court, Chief Justice Ahmed discussed the ongoing efforts of the judiciary to uphold human rights and judicial independence. He expressed the judiciary’s commitment to maintaining the rule of law in the country, a commitment that has been at the heart of the judicial system since the post-independence era.
Ambassador Ochoa praised the Chief Justice for his recent efforts in strengthening the independence of the judiciary in Bangladesh. He expressed confidence that under the current leadership of the Chief Justice, Bangladesh would continue to make significant strides in ensuring the rule of law and justice for all its citizens.
The meeting also touched upon the cultural and historical ties between Bangladesh and Spain, with both sides acknowledging the importance of mutual respect for each other’s traditions and values. Ambassador Ochoa expressed Spain’s readiness to provide full support for strengthening Bangladesh's judiciary, particularly in the modernization of the judicial system. He offered technical assistance to help further enhance the country’s judicial capabilities.
In response, Chief Justice Ahmed reiterated Bangladesh's firm commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice for all citizens. He emphasized the importance of judicial reform and institutionalizing judicial independence. He assured the Spanish Ambassador of Bangladesh’s continued cooperation in improving the judiciary and expressed hope for increasing collaboration between the two countries in this field.
The Chief Justice also assured Ambassador Ochoa of the Supreme Court’s full cooperation in fostering a stronger partnership between Bangladesh and Spain, especially in the modernization of the judiciary.
