For the first time in nearly seven years, BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia will celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr with her family members in London, marking an emotional and long-awaited reunion.
According to BNP’s Media Cell member Shairul Kabir Khan, Khaleda Zia—who traveled to London in January for medical treatment—will spend the holy occasion with her elder son and BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman, his wife, her younger son Arafat Rahman Koko’s widow, and her three granddaughters.
This marks a significant moment for the BNP chief, as it will be her first Eid with family since 2017. During her previous visit to London that year, she spent Eid-ul-Azha with her family after undergoing medical treatment. However, subsequent legal issues, prolonged illness, and years in confinement had kept her separated from her loved ones during Eid celebrations.
The political veteran’s reunion with her family is being seen as both a deeply personal moment and one carrying emotional resonance for her supporters and party members.
Meanwhile, BNP leaders and senior party officials have finalized their plans for Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations this year. Party Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will be observing Eid in Dhaka. On the morning of Eid day, he, along with BNP Standing Committee members, will pay tribute at the grave of the party’s founder, President Ziaur Rahman.
Later in the day, Fakhrul is scheduled to visit the BNP chief advisor’s residence to exchange Eid greetings and extend well wishes.
Other key leaders will be spread across different regions during the holiday. BNP Standing Committee members Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan and Professor Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain are currently in London and will celebrate Eid there. Senior BNP figure Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury will return to his constituency in Chattogram for the occasion.
Most other senior leaders are expected to remain in Dhaka and attend local celebrations, while members of the party’s affiliated organizations will participate in Eid prayers in their respective hometowns.
The BNP’s Eid preparations come at a time of reflection and reunion, especially with their chairperson able to reconnect with family overseas. Party supporters across the country are expected to follow her Eid activities with interest and emotion, as they see her reunion as a symbol of resilience and hope amid years of political challenges and personal hardship.
As the nation prepares to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr, this year holds particular significance for Khaleda Zia and the BNP family—a return to togetherness, even if momentarily, after years marked by separation.
