Laxmipur, Jan 25 — Interim government advisor Mahfuz Alam emphasized the need to dismantle the institutional support system that keeps Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in power before heading towards a fair and credible election. Speaking at a reception event at Ramganj Upazila Government College grounds on Saturday afternoon, Mahfuz said justice for victims of political violence and reforming the existing political infrastructure are prerequisites for a meaningful election.
"We cannot proceed with an election while maintaining the institutions that have bolstered Hasina's regime. Her proxies and loyalists embedded within these systems must be eradicated. Only after ensuring justice for the victims of past violence can we move forward towards an election," Mahfuz stated.
He urged the public to reject subservience to any external influence and called for a united effort to uphold the spirit of those who sacrificed their lives in past political struggles. Referring to the events of July 24, where protesters were killed or injured, Mahfuz said, "The student and public movements that emerged then must inspire us to continue the fight. If the Awami League seeks to align itself with external powers and intimidate us, we will not stand idle. We will follow in the footsteps of our martyrs and choose the path of sacrifice if necessary."
Mahfuz declared that the struggle is far from over, as the removal of the Awami League's "fascist regime" alone would not suffice. He pointed to the pervasive influence of authoritarian practices within the administration, educational institutions, and cultural sectors, vowing to bring all perpetrators to justice.
"Our mission is not complete until the roots of fascism—whether in governance, education, or culture—are eradicated and held accountable. We must fulfill the aspirations of the martyrs by implementing justice and systemic reforms," he asserted.
The interim government advisor revealed plans for comprehensive reforms, including proposals to restructure several commissions and institutions. These proposals would be discussed and finalized in collaboration with political parties before moving towards elections.
"We have drafted proposals for significant institutional reforms. A consensus among political parties will soon lead to the implementation of these changes, paving the way for elections," Mahfuz added.
He called upon all political parties and anti-fascist forces to unite and collaborate with the government in its reform agenda. "Let us unite under the banner of a Bangladesh-centric approach. Together, as anti-fascist forces, we can support the government in its efforts to implement these necessary reforms," he concluded.
