In the span of 72 hours, 30 people have fallen victim to kidnappings in Baharchhara Union, Teknaf, Cox's Bazar, with the latest incident involving Saeed Hossain, the son of the late Abbas Mia, a mason from the area. On Friday evening, armed terrorists descended from the hills and fired blank shots before breaking into Saeed's home. They held a weapon to his head and abducted him, taking him to the mountains, according to his family.
A local resident, Nur Hossain, described the incident, saying, "After the Maghrib prayer, a group of mountain bandits descended into the area, held someone at gunpoint, and kidnapped them. We are feeling extremely unsafe."
Nurul Islam, a member of the 8th Ward of Baharchhara Union, confirmed the incident, adding that two others were abducted earlier in the day and taken to the mountains, where they were held captive.
Shovon Kumar Saha, Officer-in-Charge of Baharchhara Police Investigation Center, mentioned that the police had reached the site after hearing reports of blank gunfire. "We are taking the matter seriously and an operation is underway to rescue the abducted Jasim," he stated.
In recent days, there has been a surge in kidnappings in the area, with 30 people taken by force. Although law enforcement has managed to secure the release of 26 individuals through rescue operations and ransom payments, four people are still held captive by the kidnapping syndicate. One of the victims, a grocery store owner named Jasim, is reportedly being demanded a ransom of 10 lakh taka.
The series of kidnappings has left the local community in a state of fear, with residents urgently calling for a large-scale crackdown to restore safety.
