Students of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) are planning to travel to Dhaka to submit a memorandum to the Chief Advisor in support of their six-point demands. The protest, which has been ongoing, is fueled by dissatisfaction with the current university administration, and the students will depart for the capital on Sunday, February 23, after holding a press conference at 6:30 AM at the university’s Student Welfare Building.

This decision comes after the KUET Teachers' Association issued a counter-statement in support of the Vice-Chancellor (VC), triggering the students to take further steps. The students have been in protest for more than 24 hours, with the VC's residence still locked as of February 22. Despite the VC taking a one-day leave for medical treatment in Dhaka, he has not returned after three days, raising questions about his absence.

Speaking on behalf of the protesting students, Rahatul Islam explained that they are not demanding political involvement on campus but instead are pushing for the creation of a campus free from political activities. He further stressed that there had been no incident of the VC being harassed by students, contrary to what was being reported by some sources. Instead, he claimed there has been a deliberate attempt to spread misinformation about the students' actions. The students intend to submit their memorandum to the Chief Advisor, asking for intervention in the ongoing situation and a resolution to their concerns.

In response to the protests, the KUET Teachers' Association issued a statement expressing deep concern over the alleged physical harassment of the Vice-Chancellor and several other faculty members. The statement condemned the actions of certain students and expressed outrage over incidents in which teachers were allegedly mistreated. The association also condemned the violent actions of outsiders who entered the campus on February 18 and injured both students and faculty members with sharp weapons.

Meanwhile, KUET’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Mohammad Masud, who had traveled to Dhaka for medical treatment on Thursday, has yet to return. Students have locked the gates of his residence, which remained locked on the evening of February 22. This move reflects the students' dissatisfaction with the administration’s handling of the situation and their grievances over the lack of action in addressing political violence and attacks on students by political groups on campus.

In an attempt to address the situation, KUET’s Vice-Chancellor had previously handed over charge to the university's Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Mohammad Shariful Islam, before leaving for Dhaka. The Pro-Vice-Chancellor stated that the VC had planned to return and attend Juma prayers on campus but has yet to return. Dr. Islam also mentioned hearing that the VC may stay in Dhaka for a few more days for medical treatment. Meanwhile, the students’ protest continues, and the administration is engaging in discussions with the students in an effort to resolve the ongoing tensions.

The current situation at KUET highlights ongoing dissatisfaction with the university's administration, especially regarding its handling of campus politics and the perceived lack of accountability for violent incidents. The students have made it clear that they will not accept the current leadership until their demands are addressed, particularly the establishment of a campus free from political influence and the protection of student rights.
