Supreme Court lawyer Mohammad Shishir Monir has announced that he will no longer represent the defendants in the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) student Abrar Fahad murder case. He made this declaration through a Facebook post on Thursday.
In a social media post titled ‘My Statement,’ he wrote that the High Court hearing for the case had concluded, and the verdict was pending. He stated that it would not be appropriate to provide further details at this stage.
He further mentioned that he fully respects the emotions and sentiments of the public. He affirmed his decision not to represent any party in this case before the Appellate Division, regardless of the High Court’s ruling. Additionally, he indicated that he would discuss the matter with Abrar’s family and hoped that people would understand his decision amicably.
Previously, Shishir Monir had defended the death-row convicts in the High Court hearings regarding their death reference and appeal. His involvement in the case had drawn widespread criticism, particularly on social media.
The murder, which took place more than five years ago, led to the conviction and sentencing of several individuals. On February 24, the High Court completed the hearing and reserved its judgment, which is expected to be delivered at any time.
