The Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal, Md. Tazul Islam, has stated that the trial process concerning former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will continue as planned, irrespective of whether India responds to Bangladesh's formal letter regarding the matter.
Speaking to reporters on Sunday (January 19) afternoon in the tribunal's conference room, Tazul Islam addressed questions regarding India's involvement. He explained that, as per the extradition treaty between the two countries, a formal request has been made to India. However, even if India does not respond, the legal and judicial processes will proceed unhindered.
Tazul Islam clarified that the process of arrest involves the entire law enforcement apparatus and does not fall under the purview of the prosecution or the investigative agency. Once any arrests are made and the individuals are brought before the tribunal, further details can be provided. He noted that law enforcement authorities are better positioned to offer explanations about arrests.
The Chief Prosecutor emphasized that efforts are ongoing, with notable progress being made. He mentioned that some case reports are expected soon, as investigations rely on various sources of information and require precise coordination of multiple witness testimonies. This meticulous process demands time, but work continues with dedication.
He also highlighted that the tribunal is actively investigating cases related to genocide and crimes against humanity. Tazul Islam expressed optimism that critical information related to these crimes will be revealed soon, as investigations are moving forward steadily.
