The price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) has been increased again following the recent hike in value-added tax (VAT) on a range of goods and services. The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) announced on Tuesday (January 14) that the price for a 12kg LPG cylinder has been adjusted to Tk 1,459 at the consumer level, up from Tk 1,455 set earlier this month on January 2.

This marks a continuation of rising prices, as the cost had remained unchanged throughout December before the latest adjustments were made. The revised prices have taken into account VAT changes and have been implemented immediately as per BERC's directive.

In addition to the 12kg cylinder price hike, other categories of LPG and related services have also seen adjustments. The price of privately supplied LPG per kilogram now stands at Tk 121.56, compared to the previous rate of Tk 121.19 before the VAT adjustment. Meanwhile, reticulated gas, supplied in liquid form through pipelines, has been priced at Tk 117.81 per kilogram under the new structure.

Furthermore, the cost of autogas, used as fuel for vehicles, has been increased to Tk 67.27 per liter, up from the earlier rate of Tk 66.78. These price hikes are expected to affect both household and commercial users across the country.

BERC stated that the adjustments reflect the need to align domestic prices with international market trends and incorporate changes in VAT policies. However, the increase has raised concerns among consumers, who are already grappling with inflationary pressures across various sectors.
