The government has extended the executive magistracy powers granted to military officers for a second consecutive time. According to a notification from the Ministry of Public Administration on Sunday, the new extension will be valid for the next 60 days starting from Tuesday and will apply nationwide.

Previously, the executive magistrate powers were first granted to military officers in the field, under the assistance of law enforcement agencies, on September 17 for two months. This was later extended to apply to officers in the Navy and other branches of the armed forces at the commissioned level as well. The first extension took place on November 16, giving an additional two months of executive powers.

The latest notification states that executive magistrate powers have now been assigned to commissioned officers of the Bangladesh Army, specifically those holding the rank of Captain or higher, who will be empowered to carry out these duties across the entire country. These powers will remain in effect for 60 days, beginning January 14.

The deployment of the military began before the government was ousted during the student and public protests, and the army was stationed across the country. Following the government’s fall on August 5, although curfew was lifted, the law and order situation remained chaotic, and military personnel continued to remain on the ground to help restore order. Subsequently, joint forces operations were also launched to control the situation.
