BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has stated that the claim of BNP barring Awami League from engaging in politics is “not accurate.”
Speaking at an event at BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's ancestral home in Feni on Wednesday, Mirza Fakhrul emphasized, “Awami League is a political party. It is the people who decide who will or won’t participate in politics. There is no room for misunderstanding here.”
His remarks came in response to a recent statement by interim government Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus. In an interview with The Hindu, Yunus was asked whether Awami League would be allowed to compete in the upcoming elections. He had reportedly replied, “BNP has said that all political parties will have the opportunity to contest in the elections. They have already made their position clear.”
Addressing this comment, Fakhrul clarified, “There has been some misunderstanding regarding this matter. We have never barred any party from contesting elections. However, those who have committed killings, corruption, and plundered national wealth must face justice, including Sheikh Hasina and others.”
He reiterated, “The people will decide who can do politics and who cannot.”
The statement underscores BNP’s position that political accountability and justice are essential, while asserting that the ultimate power lies with the public to determine the political future of any party.
