BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir held a meeting with European Union (EU) Ambassador Michael Miller on Sunday afternoon. The ambassador’s official vehicle entered the BNP Chairperson’s office in Gulshan around 3:30 PM, and the meeting lasted approximately one hour.

Present at the meeting were BNP Standing Committee members Abdul Moyeen Khan and Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, along with the party’s Organizing Secretary Shyama Obaid. Speaking to journalists afterward, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury emphasized the urgency of holding a national election within the current year, reiterating BNP's stance on necessary reforms to ensure a credible electoral process.

Addressing the topics of discussion, Amir Khasru stated that the meeting focused on significant questions surrounding Bangladesh's current political scenario, particularly the issue of elections. He noted that the EU ambassador inquired about BNP’s thoughts on election timing, the necessary reforms for a fair electoral process, and the party’s expectations for the road ahead. Discussions extensively covered the roadmap to the next election.

Amir Khasru highlighted BNP’s consistent demand for holding elections promptly to restore democratic governance. He stressed the importance of transferring power to an elected government through a democratic process at the earliest opportunity, stating that such a transition is vital for ensuring Bangladesh’s political stability.

The meeting also included discussions on proposed reforms. According to Amir Khasru, BNP expressed its willingness to immediately implement reforms on which consensus can be achieved. For reforms that lack unanimous agreement, political parties will present their proposals to the public during the election campaign, seek mandates from voters, and bring them to the parliament for further debate and approval.

The country’s economic challenges were also a topic of deliberation. Amir Khasru outlined BNP’s initiatives to address the current economic crisis and shared that the party has already devised several programs aimed at economic recovery. He assured that if the present government introduces any effective measures to revive the economy, BNP would support such initiatives in the interest of the nation.

The meeting further touched on the EU’s interest in investing in Bangladesh. According to Amir Khasru, the EU ambassador conveyed that European investors are keen to explore opportunities in Bangladesh. In response, BNP expressed its openness to foreign investments and welcomed the prospect of collaboration with international stakeholders.

In conclusion, the meeting underscored the pressing need for electoral reforms, a timely national election, and a collective effort to address the economic challenges facing the country. Both parties exchanged insights on fostering democracy, ensuring transparency, and promoting sustainable economic development.
