Afghanistan’s seasoned all-rounder Mohammad Nabi is utilizing his participation in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) as a platform to prepare for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy. Representing Fortune Barishal in the ongoing BPL, Nabi sees the tournament as an opportunity to enhance his fitness and fine-tune his skills, even though it is a T20 format.
The Champions Trophy is set to mark a significant milestone in Nabi’s career as it will be his farewell to the One Day International (ODI) format. Before focusing on the Champions Trophy, Nabi remains committed to his current BPL campaign, where his team is set to face Sylhet Strikers tomorrow. Speaking at a press conference on behalf of Fortune Barishal, Nabi reflected on his dual preparation for the two distinct formats.
Nabi explained that while his immediate focus is on the BPL, his training regime is also aligned with the requirements of ODI cricket. "Right now, my focus is on the BPL. Once I return, I’ll shift my attention to the Champions Trophy. However, I’m mentally preparing myself already. Maintaining physical and mental fitness is crucial. Since the next tournament is in the ODI format, I’m keeping 100-over matches in mind. I’m dedicating extra effort to fitness and spending extended hours batting and bowling during practice sessions," he said.
Despite the differences in formats, Nabi believes that adaptation lies in the mindset. He added, "It’s all about mentality. As I mentioned, I’m preparing my body for ODIs while also ensuring I’m ready for the BPL. This dual approach benefits both tournaments."
The ICC Champions Trophy is scheduled to take place from February 19 to March 9, with Pakistan hosting the ninth edition of the tournament. Afghanistan is placed in Group B alongside Australia, England, and South Africa. Group A comprises hosts Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, and New Zealand.
As the Champions Trophy draws closer, Nabi’s commitment to his fitness and versatility underscores his dedication to finishing his ODI career on a high note. His approach reflects a balance between focusing on the immediate challenges of the BPL and preparing for the demands of ODI cricket on an international stage.
