A Kushtia court has sentenced three men to death for the murder of Sanowara Begum (48) and her eight-year-old son, Raj, during a robbery at their home in Daulatpur. The convicted individuals have also been fined Tk 50,000 each, with an additional one-year rigorous imprisonment in case of non-payment.

The verdict was delivered on Wednesday (November 20) by Judge Sohani Pushan of the Kushtia Additional District and Sessions Judge's Court. Bench assistant Arup Royhan confirmed the ruling. The convicted individuals are Ali Akbar, son of Imran Hossain from Sonaikandi village; Lalchand Mondal, son of the late Shahidul Islam from the same village; and Hanif Molla, son of Sekendar Molla from Jowardarpara in the same upazila.

The three convicts were present in court during the sentencing and were later transferred to the district jail under police escort.

The incident occurred on the night of November 17, 2019, in Sonaikandi village of Daulatpur upazila. According to the case, Sanowara Begum and her son Raj were asleep in their house when the accused broke in to commit a robbery. Upon waking, Sanowara attempted to resist and raise the alarm but was suffocated to death. Her son Raj met the same fate. The attackers used a muffler to strangle Sanowara and a towel to kill Raj, ensuring their deaths before stealing valuables, including a mobile phone, from the house.

Sanowara Begum was the wife of Manik from Sonaikandi village and lived with her son in the house. The next day, on November 18, 2019, Parvina Khatun filed a murder case with Daulatpur Police Station. Following an investigation, the police submitted a charge sheet against the accused on December 27, 2019.

The court heard testimonies and reviewed evidence before delivering the verdict. Public Prosecutor Khondaker Sirajul Islam could not be reached for comments despite multiple attempts.

Bench assistant Arup Royhan stated, “The court has handed the death penalty to three individuals for murdering a mother and her son during a robbery. All three convicts were present during the announcement of the verdict.”
