Interim government’s Information Advisor Nahid Islam has stated that if he decides to resign, he will make an official announcement himself. Speaking to journalists at the ministry on Thursday, January 30, he addressed the ongoing speculation regarding his potential resignation.
Responding to reports circulating in various media outlets about his possible departure from the government, Nahid Islam remarked that he had come across such reports both in newspapers and on social media. However, he pointed out that the sources of these reports were unclear.
He further clarified that no such decision has been made as of now. If there is any development regarding his resignation or political involvement, it will be formally communicated. He emphasized that neither he nor Asif Mahmud, the Sports Advisor, has made any such decision yet and that they continue to fulfill their responsibilities within the government.
Earlier on the same day, a report by Amar Desh claimed that a new political party, led by student and youth activists from the July uprising, was on the verge of being officially launched. The report suggested that Nahid Islam and Asif Mahmud were expected to resign by February 15 to pave the way for this political initiative. It also mentioned that another government advisor, Mahfuz Alam, might step down by June.
Sources indicate that the new political party, led by student activists, will initially form a convening committee. Nahid Islam is reportedly set to be the member secretary of this committee. The party's draft constitution is currently being finalized.
Rumors regarding the formation of a student-led political party have been circulating for some time. Recently, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir commented on the matter, stating that if a political party is formed under the leadership of students who are currently part of the government, it would not be acceptable. Addressing this statement, Nahid Islam told the media that if he decides to join a political party, he will first step down from his government position.
Sources have revealed that during a recent meeting of the National Citizens’ Committee, a majority of members expressed the opinion that at least one or more student advisors from the interim government should resign. The argument was that student leaders who enjoy significant public support should leave their government positions and take leadership roles in the new political party.
Ariful Islam Adib, Joint Convener of the National Citizens’ Committee, told the media that the aspirations of the people, particularly those who were part of the July uprising, demand that the student leaders who played a key role in the movement should now take leadership in a new political initiative. He urged the student representatives currently in government to step down and lead the emerging political movement.
He added that farmers, workers, students, and the general public are eagerly looking towards those who led the uprising. Just as they played a role in overthrowing the previous regime, they are now expected to work towards eliminating collaborators of the old system and establishing a progressive, welfare-oriented state.
Reports suggest that the National Citizens’ Committee, along with the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, plans to officially announce their new party by February 15. Before the announcement, a 24-point manifesto is being drafted, and a 17-member committee has been tasked with its preparation.
