In a significant move, the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges has announced the renaming of several highways and bridges previously named after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her family members. This decision comes following the recent student-led uprising that led to the ousting of the former prime minister. The new names for these roads and bridges were made official through a notification signed by Md. Golam Zilani, Senior Assistant Secretary of the Roads and Highways Department, on Monday.
According to the notification, the name of the Dhaka-Mawa Highway, extending from the Jatrabari intersection to Mawa (35 kilometers) and from Pachar to Bhanga (20 kilometers), has been changed from “Shatru Sheikh Hasina Expressway” to “Dhaka-Mawa-Bhanga Expressway.”
Another notable change involves the Syllhet district’s Airport Bypass Intersection-Lalbagh-Salutikar-Kompani Ganj-Bholaganj National Highway, which has been renamed from "Shatru Sheikh Hasina Highway" to "Sylhet District Airport Bypass Intersection-Lalbagh-Salutikar-Kompani Ganj-Bholaganj National Highway."
The Madaripur Roads Division, which spans 222.75 kilometers from Madaripur (Mostafapur) via Kazirtek Bridge to Shariatpur, has also seen a name change from "Sheikh Hasina Highway" to "Kazirtek Bridge-Shariatpur Highway."
In Chittagong, the road linking Bortakia (Abutorab) to the Mirshorai Economic Zone, previously called "Sheikh Hasina Sarani," will now be known as "Bortakia (Abutorab)-Mirshorai Economic Zone Connection Road."
The 278.88-meter PC Girder Bridge over the Korotoya River at Kandahghat in Pirganj Upazila has been renamed from “Wazed Mia Bridge” to "Kandah Bridge."
For the Patuakhali-Kuakata Regional Highway, the 49th kilometer bridge over the Andarmanik River was originally named “Sheikh Kamal Bridge” but has now been changed to “Andarmanik Bridge.” Similarly, the 61st kilometer bridge over the Sonatola River has been renamed from “Sheikh Jamal Bridge” to “Sonatola Bridge,” while the 66th kilometer bridge over the Khapravanga River is now “Khapravanga Bridge,” previously called “Sheikh Russell Bridge.”
The 387.31-meter-long Indurkani Bridge, constructed over the Balleshwar River in the Jianagar Upazila of Pirojpur District, has been renamed from “Shaheed Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni Bridge” to “Indurkani Bridge.”
Additionally, the Rajapur-Naikathi-Bekutia-Pirojpur District Highway in Pirojpur Road Division, specifically the 12th kilometer Bikutia Point, where the Kacha River’s Bangladesh-China Friendship Bridge was previously named “Bangamata Begum Fazilatun Nessa Mujib 8th Bangladesh-China Friendship Bridge,” will now be referred to as “Bekutia Bridge.”
The second Shitalakshya Bridge in Narayanganj, initially called "Sultana Kamal Bridge," has been renamed “Demra Bridge,” and the Dapdapia Bridge in Barisal, formerly “Shaheed Abdur Rob Serniabad Bridge,” is now “Dapdapia Bridge.”
These renaming efforts, which are aimed at serving public interest, will be effective immediately as per the notification issued by the Ministry.
