The newly constructed Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Railway Bridge over the Jamuna River in Tangail has been renamed as the 'Jamuna Rail Bridge'. In addition, the names of the two railway stations at the bridge’s east and west ends have also been changed. The east station will now be called Ibrahimabad, and the west station will be named Soydabad.
Tanvirul Islam, the chief engineer of the rail bridge, confirmed this change on Sunday afternoon. He stated that the relevant department has officially renamed the bridge as 'Jamuna Rail Bridge' and the two stations as Ibrahimabad and Soydabad.
On Friday, December 20, Railway Secretary Fahimul Islam visited the newly constructed Ibrahimabad Bridge and the Soydabad Modern Railway Station at both ends of the bridge. During his visit, he informed reporters that the Jamuna Rail Bridge would be inaugurated at the end of January or the first week of February next year.
The Jamuna River had previously been crossed by the Bangabandhu Bridge, which opened in 1998, linking Dhaka with the north-western regions of the country by rail. However, due to cracks in the bridge that appeared in 2008, train speeds were reduced. Currently, about 38 trains cross the bridge daily at a speed of 20 kilometers per hour.
To address these issues, the previous government initiated the construction of a separate rail bridge 300 meters upstream of the existing Bangabandhu Bridge over the Jamuna River. The foundation stone for this new bridge was laid by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on November 29, 2020, via a virtual ceremony. The construction of the pillars for the rail bridge began in March 2021.
Initially, the estimated cost of the project was set at 9,734 crore 7 lakh taka. However, this was later revised to 16,780 crore 96 lakh taka. The funding for the project is shared, with 27.60% of the financing coming from domestic sources, while the remaining 72.40% is being provided as a loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
