Dhaka, March 10 – Nahid Islam, the convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP), has dismissed allegations that the party is engaging in politics aimed at delaying elections. Speaking at an iftar and prayer event organized by the NCP at Suhrawardy Udyan, Nahid emphasized the need for justice, reform, and a new constitution. The event honored the July uprising martyrs and their families, as well as injured activists.

Nahid Islam stated, “Let me be clear: we are not advocating for politics that hinder justice and reform. We urge all to unite on the principles of justice and reform. We will assist in ensuring elections are held, but we call on the government to promptly announce a roadmap for judicial accountability and reforms.”

She reiterated that the NCP was formed to participate in elections, but stressed that the current constitution, which she described as “fascist,” has failed. She called for a new constitution to be drafted through a constituent assembly, reflecting the aspirations of the nation.

Nahid Islam also raised concerns about the lack of accountability for crimes committed against Sheikh Hasina and Awami League members. “Hundreds of cases have been filed against the killers of Sheikh Hasina and Awami League activists. If another government comes to power without addressing these cases, what guarantees are there that the Awami League will not be rehabilitated in Bangladesh?” she questioned.

She further emphasized the need for accountability from the government’s advisors, including the chief advisor, regarding the progress of reforms. “We will hold them accountable for the reforms they promised. If political parties are in such a hurry for elections, they must be prepared to answer tough questions when seeking votes,” she added.

Nahid Islam highlighted the importance of maintaining the national consensus that has emerged in Bangladesh. She announced that the NCP would soon take to the streets to demand justice, reforms, and elections for a constituent assembly. “We are not against elections. In fact, we formed our party to participate in them. However, we advocate for elections to a constituent assembly, as the current constitution has been rendered ineffective and illegitimate by the July-August uprising. Through recognizing the July uprising, we aim to gift the nation a new constitution,” she declared.

The NCP leader’s remarks underscore the party’s commitment to systemic change, judicial accountability, and a participatory democratic process, while rejecting accusations of delaying elections.
