In a speech delivered to the nation on Victory Day, December 16, Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus announced the formation of a "National Consensus Building Commission" aimed at leading significant national reforms. This commission will be composed of the chairpersons from six specialized reform commissions previously established by the interim government, with the task of ensuring consensus on key issues of national importance.

Addressing the importance of unity in times of change, Dr. Yunus emphasized that achieving political consensus is crucial when undertaking any major reform. “When engaging in reform work, political agreement becomes essential,” said the Chief Advisor. He expressed optimism about the progress made so far, noting, “The interim government has already formed six reform commissions in the first phase, and I am hopeful that they will soon present their final reports. Moving forward, we are preparing to form a 'National Consensus Building Commission,' which will be composed of the chairpersons of these six reform commissions.”

Further outlining the role of the new commission, Dr. Yunus stated, “Its function will be to engage in dialogue with political parties and all other stakeholders to identify the areas where consensus can be established. Once consensus is achieved, the commission will put forward recommendations for implementation.”

Given the significance of national consensus in the current political landscape, Dr. Yunus also confirmed his own involvement in leading the commission. “Since establishing national consensus is a vital responsibility of the interim government, I will personally serve as the chairman of this commission. Alongside me, Professor Ali Riaz will serve as the vice-chairman,” he announced.

Dr. Yunus also left room for flexibility in the commission’s composition, mentioning that new members could be added if the commission deemed it necessary. “Once we receive the final reports from the six reform commissions, I expect that the National Consensus Building Commission will be able to begin its work as early as next month,” he concluded.

With the announcement of this new commission, the interim government is signaling its commitment to fostering unity across political divides and ensuring that the path to reform is supported by broad-based consensus across the nation.
