BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has stated that holding the national parliamentary elections by mid-2025 is feasible. He made this remark during a press conference held at the BNP Chairperson’s office in Gulshan on Wednesday, January 14.

Mirza Fakhrul questioned the rationale behind prioritizing other elections over the national parliamentary polls. He emphasized that the Election Commission has already clarified that the national and local elections cannot be conducted simultaneously.

Responding to a question, Fakhrul cautioned against rushing into decisions that could lead to further controversies or questions about legitimacy.

Regarding the July uprising proclamation draft, Fakhrul revealed that they had received a draft proposal from government advisor Mahfuz Alam. He added that the party was consulting constitutional experts and holding discussions before arriving at any final conclusion. Highlighting BNP’s founding principles, Fakhrul remarked that the party emerged from a reformist agenda under Ziaur Rahman, who reinstated multi-party democracy in the country. He asserted that reform is a continuous process that the party remains committed to.

Fakhrul also mentioned ongoing dialogues with all the parties involved in the simultaneous movement. Addressing the health of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, who is currently undergoing treatment in London, he said that her condition has improved both mentally and physically.

In addition, Mirza Fakhrul called for transparency regarding agreements signed between Bangladesh and India. He insisted that all such deals should be disclosed to the public.

The press conference was attended by several senior BNP leaders, including Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan, a member of the party’s standing committee.
