As the nation gears up to celebrate Victory Day on December 16, the National Memorial in Savar is being meticulously prepared to honor the brave martyrs who sacrificed their lives for Bangladesh's independence. The iconic structure is undergoing extensive beautification efforts, including cleaning, painting, landscaping, and security upgrades, to ensure a dignified and fitting tribute.
A visit to the National Memorial reveals workers engaged in a variety of tasks to enhance its grandeur. Some are painting walls and structures, while others are laying bricks or cleaning the premises. Water is being sprayed to wash every corner of the complex, while electricians work on lighting fixtures, and gardeners carefully nurture flowering plants. Workers are also installing CCTV cameras to bolster security. The memorial grounds are being adorned with vibrant flowers and greenery, creating a serene and solemn atmosphere for visitors.
According to Aminul, a cleanliness worker involved in the project, preparations began a month ago to ensure the memorial is at its best for the occasion. He has been working at the site for ten days and expressed his satisfaction in contributing to such an important cause.
Abdul Matin, a gardener overseeing the care of plants, shared his enthusiasm for his role in beautifying the site. He explained that various species of flowering plants have been added to enhance the memorial's appeal, anticipating that hundreds of thousands of people will visit to pay their respects on Victory Day.
For over 42 years, G.M. Anwarul Islam has been responsible for the handwritten inscriptions at the National Memorial. Starting his work on December 1, he carefully writes all the messages commemorating the nation’s heroes. Despite familial concerns about his commitment, he continues this work out of a sense of pride and devotion.
Mizanur Rahman, the in-charge of the National Memorial and an assistant engineer at the Public Works Department in Savar, highlighted the extensive preparations undertaken to ensure a flawless Victory Day celebration. He noted that the memorial complex has been cleaned, repainted, decorated with flowers, and equipped with enhanced security measures, including CCTV installations. These efforts, initiated nearly six weeks ago, aim to provide a pristine environment for dignitaries and the public.
The Victory Day ceremony will begin at midnight, with the President, Chief Advisor, other advisors, diplomats, and distinguished guests placing floral wreaths at the Shaheed Minar to pay homage to the nation’s martyrs. Following this, thousands of citizens from all walks of life are expected to visit the memorial throughout the day, offering flowers and expressing their gratitude to the fallen heroes.
To ensure safety and security, Dhaka District Police have implemented strict security protocols. Plainclothes officers from intelligence agencies will also be present to maintain order and assist visitors during the event.
Victory Day holds profound significance for the people of Bangladesh, marking the culmination of the liberation struggle in 1971. The preparations at the National Memorial reflect the collective respect and admiration for those who fought for the nation’s independence. The serene and vibrant setting will serve as a poignant reminder of their sacrifice and inspire visitors to reflect on the values of freedom and unity.
