The Election Commission (EC) of Bangladesh has announced that approximately 4,970,388 new voters will be added to the updated voter list as part of the ongoing voter registration process. This information was revealed by Senior Secretary of the EC Secretariat, Akhtar Ahmed, during a press conference at the Election Commission office in Agargaon, Dhaka, on Tuesday.
According to the EC secretary, in addition to the new registrations, 1.77 percent of the previous voter list—amounting to 1,523,000 deceased voters—has been removed. This update is part of the Commission’s routine effort to maintain an accurate and reliable electoral roll.
Among the new voters, 1.6 million are women, a notable inclusion that reflects the Commission’s commitment to ensuring gender representation in the electoral process. The ongoing registration drive is also accommodating individuals who were previously omitted from the list. The process will continue until April 11, allowing eligible citizens to register either online or at regional offices.
The Commission has assured that any households missed during the data collection phase will be reviewed. Additionally, concerns regarding underage voter registration have been addressed, with the EC confirming that there is no evidence of individuals below the eligible voting age being registered. However, the Commission remains open to investigating any specific allegations regarding misinformation or irregularities in the registration process.
