A new student organization was announced at Dhaka University (DU) on Wednesday, leading to clashes between two factions. The announcement of the committee for the newly formed group, 'Democratic Student Movement,' took place at Modhur Canteen, where tensions escalated as private university students protested against their exclusion from the leadership.
Although the announcement was scheduled for 3:00 PM, it was delayed past 4:00 PM, causing frustration among attendees. Around 4:10 PM, a group of students from private universities arrived at Modhur Canteen, chanting slogans against the newly forming committee. Their slogans included demands for representation and criticisms of DU’s dominance in student politics. They expressed dissatisfaction over the exclusion of their leader, Rifat Rashid, who had played a significant role in past movements.
Despite the delay, the students continued their protests, and tensions escalated when another group supporting the new organization marched from the DU Daksu building. Chanting slogans in favor of unity and freedom, they entered Modhur Canteen, leading to verbal confrontations.
As the newly affiliated students attempted to proceed with their press conference, journalists raised concerns over the prolonged delay in the announcement. International Relations student Sakib Ahmed apologized for the delay and requested the audience to remain patient. However, as the private university students resumed chanting slogans, a physical confrontation broke out between the two factions.
After a brief scuffle lasting around ten minutes, the students backing the new organization moved inside Modhur Canteen, where they were joined by former coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, including Abu Bakar Majumder, Zahid Ahsan, and Hasib Al Islam. The leaders formally announced the name of their new group, the 'Democratic Student Movement.' The declaration immediately reignited tensions as private university students pushed forward, leading to another round of scuffles.
Despite the clashes, the committee was formally announced. Zahid Ahsan revealed that Abu Bakar Majumder would serve as the central convener of the organization, while he himself would take on the role of central secretary. Both had previously held key positions in the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
Additionally, the leadership for DU’s branch was announced, with Abdul Kader as the convener and Mohir Alam as the secretary. Following the announcement, members of the newly formed group initiated a rally across the DU campus, which encountered further confrontations near the Lecture Theatre Building, where private university students once again engaged in scuffles with their counterparts.
As of 6:00 PM, leaders of the new student group remained near Daksu Bhaban, while private university students were scattered across the campus, continuing their protests against their exclusion from leadership roles.
