Dhaka, November 10 - Police have issued a strict warning against unauthorized gatherings at Zero Point in Gulistan as rival political groups prepared for demonstrations in the area. The Awami League called for a protest rally on Sunday afternoon, aiming to demand the restoration of democratic rights and commemorate Shaheed Noor Hossain. Meanwhile, the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement announced a counter-gathering at the same location to oppose the Awami League’s program, further heightening tensions in the capital.
According to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), no gatherings will be permitted at Zero Point without prior authorization. DMP Deputy Commissioner of Media and Public Relations Muhammad Talebur Rahman stated, “We are fully prepared to prevent any illegal activity. No leniency will be shown.”
In a significant measure to maintain public order, 191 platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have been deployed across Dhaka and other regions, as confirmed by BGB headquarters on Sunday morning.
Earlier, the Awami League’s verified Facebook page called on supporters to gather at Zero Point in Gulistan at 3 p.m. to honor Shaheed Noor Hossain and advocate for “the removal of anti-democratic forces and the reestablishment of democratic governance.” In response, the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement declared a counter-protest at the same location at 12 p.m., demanding accountability and justice for alleged actions by the Awami League.
Supporters began arriving at Zero Point on Saturday night, while crowds also formed outside the Awami League’s central office. By Sunday morning, BNP activists could be seen outside the Awami League office, chanting slogans and heightening the charged atmosphere in the area.
