Economic Advisor Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed has assured that the upcoming budget for the fiscal year 2025-26 will aim to shield poor citizens from excessive tax burdens. Speaking to journalists at the Secretariat on Thursday, he emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring economic equity while addressing issues of tax evasion among businesses.
Dr. Ahmed stated that the poor will receive protection from the impact of taxes under the proposed budget framework. He expressed concerns about widespread tax evasion, noting, “Businesses often seek loopholes to evade taxes. They generate revenues of 500 million taka but are unwilling to pay even 40 million in taxes.”
The advisor also discussed the government’s decision to support Beximco Group in addressing worker wage crises, explaining that funds were provided for humanitarian reasons. “If the financial support wasn’t extended, workers wouldn’t have received their wages,” he said, adding that the decision was aimed at preventing labor unrest.
However, Dr. Ahmed clarified that no further funds will be allocated to Beximco Group for wage payments in the future. “The wages for their workers have already been deposited directly into their bank accounts. This was done to avoid street protests. But moving forward, such financial assistance will not be repeated,” he said.
Addressing broader concerns about financial governance, Dr. Ahmed stressed the importance of holding wrongdoers accountable while ensuring that workers are not penalized for corporate misconduct. He reiterated that companies must take responsibility for meeting their obligations and adhering to ethical business practices.
The advisor’s remarks underscore the government’s dual focus on promoting social welfare and enforcing compliance among businesses. The upcoming budget is expected to reflect these priorities, balancing the need for fiscal responsibility with measures to protect vulnerable populations.
