Police have arrested Muaz Bin Noor, a prominent leader of the pro-Saad faction of Tablighi Jamaat, in connection with the violent clashes over control of the Bishwa Ijtema ground in Tongi, Gazipur. The arrest was made on Thursday night in the Uttara area of the capital, Dhaka.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Tongi West Police Station, Iskandar Habibur Rahman, confirmed the arrest to the media on Friday morning. According to OC Rahman, Muaz Bin Noor was apprehended late Thursday night, and efforts to capture the remaining accused individuals are ongoing.
The incident in question occurred on the night of December 18, when supporters of Maulana Zubair and Maulana Saad clashed over possession of the Bishwa Ijtema ground. The violent confrontation resulted in the deaths of four individuals and injuries to over fifty others.
In the aftermath, a murder case was filed on Thursday evening at Tongi West Police Station by SM Alam Hossain, a follower of Maulana Zubair. The case named 29 individuals while also including several hundred unidentified persons as accused.
Police are continuing their investigation into the matter, with efforts underway to arrest all individuals involved in the violence that has raised tensions within the Tablighi Jamaat community.
