Students from various private universities staged a demonstration on Wednesday afternoon in Rampura, Dhaka, demanding justice for the recent murders of two students—Shihan from East West University and Shimanto from American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB). The protest took place at Rampura Bridge, where students expressed their outrage and called for swift action against those responsible.
Organized under the banner of the General Students of Private Universities, the gathering highlighted concerns over increasing violence against students. Protesters alleged that Shihan and Shimanto were victims of targeted killings and accused the administration and law enforcement agencies of failing to ensure student safety across the country. They claimed these incidents reflect a disturbing trend of assaults and mysterious deaths involving university students.
During the protest, students voiced their frustrations and issued stern warnings. They accused the authorities of negligence and demanded immediate action to bring the perpetrators to justice. Protesters stated that the lack of safety has created a climate of fear among students nationwide. They alleged that these murders were part of a broader pattern of attacks designed to suppress student activism and dissent.
One of the demonstrators declared that the administration’s failure to respond adequately to such incidents is unacceptable. They emphasized that if justice is not served within 24 hours, students would escalate their protests, potentially leading to a citywide blockade. The students maintained that their partial blockade of Rampura Bridge was only a precursor to stricter actions if their demands continue to be ignored.
The demonstrators also criticized the growing insecurity for students in the country, claiming that targeted attacks and disappearances are becoming alarmingly common. They demanded that law enforcement agencies take immediate steps to ensure justice for Shihan and Shimanto, as well as guarantee the safety of students across all educational institutions.
The protest concluded with an ultimatum to the authorities, stating that unless visible actions are taken within the stipulated time frame, students will organize more aggressive demonstrations, potentially disrupting life in the capital.
