The crescent moon of the holy month of Ramadan for the year 1446 AH has been sighted in Bangladesh, marking the beginning of the sacred month of fasting. As a result, Muslims across the country will begin observing Ramadan from Sunday, March 3. The moon was sighted on Saturday evening, March 2, in various parts of the country, including Chattogram, confirming the start of Ramadan.
Earlier in the evening, the National Moon Sighting Committee convened to make a decision regarding the sighting of the Ramadan moon. The meeting was chaired by A.F.M. Khalid Hossain, the Religious Affairs Advisor. Following the confirmation of the moon sighting, devout Muslims across the country will perform Taraweeh prayers after the Isha prayers tonight. They will also wake up early for Sehri, the pre-dawn meal, to prepare for the first day of fasting.
Meanwhile, in several other countries, including Saudi Arabia, the Ramadan moon was sighted on Friday, leading to the start of Ramadan on Saturday. This slight difference in the start date is due to variations in moon sighting across different regions.
Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community. During this month, Muslims abstain from food, drink, and other physical needs from dawn until sunset, focusing on spiritual growth and self-discipline. The sighting of the crescent moon is a significant event, as it determines the beginning and end of Ramadan.
The National Moon Sighting Committee plays a crucial role in confirming the start of Ramadan in Bangladesh. The committee relies on testimonies from various parts of the country to make an official announcement. This year, the sighting of the moon was confirmed without any significant delays, allowing Muslims to prepare for the holy month.
In addition to fasting, Ramadan is a time for increased prayer and charity. Muslims are encouraged to read the Quran, perform additional prayers, and engage in acts of kindness and generosity. The Taraweeh prayers, performed after Isha, are a special feature of Ramadan nights, where long portions of the Quran are recited in congregation.
The sighting of the Ramadan moon is a moment of joy and anticipation for Muslims worldwide. It signifies the beginning of a month-long journey of spiritual renewal and devotion. Families and communities come together to observe the rituals of Ramadan, strengthening bonds and fostering a sense of unity.
As Bangladesh joins the global Muslim community in observing Ramadan, the government and various organizations have taken steps to ensure a smooth and peaceful observance of the holy month. Special arrangements are made for the distribution of food and essential items to the needy, reflecting the spirit of charity that is central to Ramadan.
The start of Ramadan also brings changes in daily routines, with businesses and offices adjusting their schedules to accommodate the needs of fasting individuals. Streets and markets come alive at night as people gather for Iftar, the meal to break the fast, and engage in social and religious activities.
The holy month of Ramadan is not only a time for personal reflection and devotion but also an opportunity for Muslims to strengthen their connection with Allah and their community. As the crescent moon ushers in this sacred period, Muslims in Bangladesh and around the world prepare to embark on a journey of faith, discipline, and compassion.
