Professor AHM Touhidul Anwar Chowdhury, a distinguished gynecologist and former president of the Obstetrical and Gynecological Society of Bangladesh (OGSB), passed away on Sunday (March 9) at his residence. He was 86 years old. The OGSB confirmed his demise and expressed deep sorrow over the loss of one of its most respected members.
Born on October 10, 1937, in Dhaka, Professor Chowdhury hailed from Senbagh Upazila in Noakhali. He graduated from Dhaka Medical College in 1960, securing first place with honors. He later pursued advanced studies in the UK, earning his FRCS from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and MRCOG from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
Returning to Bangladesh, he began his career at Sir Salimullah Medical College and later served at Chattogram Medical College. In the 1980s, he joined the Institute of Postgraduate Medicine and Research (now Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University) and became its director in 1987. After retiring from government service in 1994, he continued to contribute as a professor and honorary chief consultant at the Obstetrics and Gynecology department of BIRDEM Hospital.
Professor Chowdhury was a founding member and later president of the Obstetrical and Gynecological Society of Bangladesh. He also held leadership roles in international medical organizations, including Vice President of the Asia and Oceania Federation of Obstetrics and Gynecology and President of the South Asia Federation of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Additionally, he served as the president of the Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons from 1991 to 1993.
In recognition of his contributions to medicine, he was awarded the Independence Award in 2017. His passing marks the end of an era in Bangladesh's medical community, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, innovation, and leadership in the field of obstetrics and gynecology.
