Dhaka, February 3 – A Dhaka court has ordered a two-day remand for six individuals, including former advisor Salman F Rahman, in connection with the murder of auto-rickshaw driver Hafizul Shikdar. The case is linked to the anti-discrimination movement that took place in the capital’s Badda area.

The order was issued on Monday morning at 10 AM by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate GM Farhan Ishtiaq. Alongside Salman F Rahman, the other accused are former Justice Abul Hossain Mohammad Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik, former Mayor Atiqul Islam, former Law Minister Anisul Haque, former Social Welfare Minister Dr. Dipu Moni, and labor leader Golam Sarwar Pintu.

Earlier in the morning, at around 9:15 AM, the accused were transported from Keraniganj Jail to the court under heavy police security. Following their appearance, the investigating officer of the case, CID’s Dhaka Metro North Inspector Riduanul Haque, applied for a five-day remand for further interrogation. The defense lawyers opposed the remand request and instead filed for bail. On behalf of the state, Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi presented arguments in favor of the remand application.

After hearing both sides, the magistrate approved a two-day remand instead of the requested five-day period.

According to the case details, on July 20 last year, during an anti-discrimination movement, auto-rickshaw driver Hafizul Shikdar, 29, was waiting for passengers at Pragati Sarani in Badda. During efforts to suppress the movement, gunfire erupted, allegedly led by the accused individuals, resulting in Hafizul’s death. The incident led to a formal case being filed at Badda Police Station on August 21.

Authorities continue to investigate the case, with further legal proceedings expected following the remand period.
