Sargis Alam, a coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, has come to the defense of Hasnat Abdullah, the movement’s convener, following recent clashes between students of Dhaka University and affiliated colleges. The altercation, which occurred late Sunday night, saw Hasnat step in to de-escalate the situation, but he found himself under fire from various critics.

In response to the criticism, Sargis took to social media on Monday afternoon, sharing a post on his verified Facebook page, where he praised Hasnat's courage and unwavering commitment to resolving conflicts. Sargis wrote that, despite the unfavorable outcome, Hasnat's intentions were pure and his actions, though controversial, were necessary.

Sargis acknowledged that Hasnat’s approach was unorthodox, stating that while others might have hesitated in the face of such danger, Hasnat bravely entered the fray to stop the violence. He expressed that while Hasnat’s headstrong nature often leads him into difficult situations, it is also what has made him a leader in moments of crisis.

Sargis recalled Hasnat’s earlier acts of bravery, citing a significant incident during the July protests, where Hasnat, without hesitation, moved toward the police line with his arms open, declaring, "we are open to being killed," as he tried to prevent further violence. Sargis noted that Hasnat has consistently stood at the forefront of important movements, even when others chose to stay on the sidelines. He highlighted Hasnat’s role in the protests against the Ansar League, where Hasnat, despite the risk, was one of the first to stand up for the people.

Sargis defended Hasnat’s quick, impulsive reactions in times of unrest, asserting that it is this very quality that drives him to seek solutions in the face of danger, whether on campus, in the streets, or elsewhere. According to Sargis, while some might criticize Hasnat for not playing it safe and staying behind their screens, it is this direct action and determination to resolve conflicts that ultimately lead to positive change.

Sargis concluded his post by affirming his unwavering support for Hasnat, emphasizing that it is young leaders like him who are shaping the future of Bangladesh. He acknowledged the complexity of the political environment but reiterated that Hasnat and his peers are committed to protecting the newfound independence and freedom of the country, no matter the cost. Sargis made it clear that the opinions of critics, especially those who benefit from the status quo, do not matter to him, as Hasnat and others like him are driven by a genuine desire to bring about change.

The post received significant attention, sparking a renewed debate on social media about leadership, activism, and the role of young people in shaping the nation’s future.
