Sergis Alam, the coordinator of the anti-discrimination student movement, has announced his resignation from the July Martyrs Memorial Foundation. He shared the reason for his departure through a post on his verified Facebook account on Wednesday morning, January 22.
Alam explained that the foundation underwent significant changes in its constitution, structure, and operational processes to accelerate its progress. As part of these changes, the position of "General Secretary" has been removed, and the "Executive Committee" will now be responsible for managing all the affairs of the foundation. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) will serve as the head of the office, a position currently held by Mir Mahbubur Rahman Snigdha.
The "Governing Body" will now focus on policymaking for the foundation, consisting of four advisors, including the Chief Advisor, and advisors on Health, Social Welfare, Local Government, and ICT. Alam made it clear that the role of "General Secretary" will no longer exist within the organization.
In his post, Alam provided a detailed account of his tenure as the General Secretary of the July Martyrs Memorial Foundation. He stated that he took on the responsibility on October 21 and served until December 31, during which time the foundation started its financial assistance program on October 1 and officially began operations on October 15. Alam continued by explaining that during his time in office, the foundation provided financial support to 628 out of 826 verified martyrs' families and approximately 2,000 injured individuals from a pool of around 11,000 verified injured persons.
Alam noted that he served with full dedication as long as he was able to contribute time and effort. However, he mentioned that as time went on, it became increasingly difficult for him to continue giving the necessary time to the foundation. He emphasized that stepping down from the role was a decision made out of personal limitations and the need to be honest about his capacity to contribute. Alam stressed that recognizing one's limitations and making decisions accordingly requires integrity and courage, rather than being seen as a weakness.
Alam concluded by saying that during his tenure, he remained committed to fulfilling his responsibilities with sincerity and effort, even as he recognized the importance of stepping aside when he could no longer give the foundation the attention it deserved.
