After more than nine months of suspension, ferry services on the Cox’s Bazar-Saint Martin’s Island route have resumed, marking a significant boost for the region’s tourism industry. On Sunday, December 1, the Bar Aulia ship set sail from the BIWTA terminal at Nunia Chhara in Cox’s Bazar with approximately 700 passengers onboard, heading for the picturesque island of Saint Martin.

This resumption has been welcomed with open arms by both tourists and stakeholders in the tourism sector. The interruption in services had dampened tourism-related activities, affecting the livelihoods of those dependent on the industry. With the reopening of the route, there is renewed optimism among business owners and locals.

The decision to resume operations was confirmed by Hossain Islam Bahadur, General Secretary of the Sea Cruise Operator Owners Association of Bangladesh and Director of the ferry service. He explained, "After over nine months, the Cox’s Bazar-Saint Martin’s route has finally reopened for passenger ships. Today, 700 passengers, including local residents of the island, departed on the Bar Aulia. This is a moment of relief for tourists and a source of joy for those involved in the tourism sector."

The ship departed at 10:00 AM and is expected to reach Saint Martin’s by 3:30 PM. After a brief stop, it will return to Cox’s Bazar at 5:00 PM. This development follows a brief delay earlier in the week when ferry operations, initially scheduled to start on Thursday, were postponed due to low passenger numbers.

Nilufer Yasmin Chowdhury, Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) of Cox’s Bazar Sadar and Convenor of the Saint Martin’s Tourism Control Committee, oversaw the relaunch and stated, "Today, the first ship with passengers has departed for Saint Martin’s. We are closely monitoring the situation to ensure there are no irregularities or instances of tourist harassment. Strict measures will be taken against any misconduct."

The reopening is part of the government’s policy to allow ferry services on the Teknaf-Saint Martin’s and Cox’s Bazar-Saint Martin’s routes between October and March each year, aligning with the calmer seas of the winter months. Services remain suspended during the remaining six months due to rough sea conditions.

In addition to Bar Aulia, two other ships, including the popular Keari Sindabad, are set to join the service on Monday, December 2, further increasing options for tourists. The resumption of ferry operations also signals the beginning of the peak tourist season, expected to bring thousands of visitors to the island, known for its pristine beaches, coral reefs, and natural beauty.

Tourism-related businesses, including hotels, restaurants, and tour operators, have expressed enthusiasm over the development. Many had struggled to stay afloat during the prolonged suspension of services. The return of ferry operations is expected to revitalize the local economy, providing a much-needed boost after months of inactivity.

Local residents of Saint Martin’s also stand to benefit from the restored connectivity. The ferry services not only bring tourists but also provide essential transportation for goods and supplies, which are vital for the daily lives of islanders.

Sunday’s successful operation comes with a commitment to ensure better management and safety. Authorities have pledged to maintain oversight to prevent any mishaps or inconveniences for travelers. Regular inspections and strict enforcement of regulations will aim to create a safe and pleasant experience for all passengers.

The reopening of the Cox’s Bazar-Saint Martin’s ferry route marks the end of a prolonged period of uncertainty and the beginning of a promising season for tourism. For those involved in the industry and visitors eager to explore the beauty of Saint Martin’s, the return of ferry services is a cause for celebration.
