Former State Minister for Home Affairs Sohel Taj has refuted allegations implicating late politician Syed Ashraful Islam in the decisions surrounding the Shapla Chattar incident. In a social media post, Sohel Taj emphasized that such accusations are unfounded and clarified that all major decisions were made at the highest level of authority.

On Friday, January 3, at 5:34 PM, Sohel Taj made this statement through a post on his verified Facebook profile titled "Breaking the Silence: Episode 1." In the post, he stated, "Those of you blaming Ashraf Bhai for the Shapla Chattar incident are not correct. He may have said certain things, but all decisions came from the very top." He also hinted at further revelations, adding, "The series will continue; now it's my turn."

The Shapla Chattar incident dates back to May 5, 2013, when Hefazat-e-Islam organized a demonstration at the commercial hub of Motijheel in Dhaka. The group had put forward 13 demands, including protests against alleged blasphemy by bloggers and opposition to the women's policy. The day was marked by tension and violence as clashes erupted during the demonstration. By nightfall, the area around Shapla Chattar had become a site of heightened fear and unrest. Security forces, including the police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), eventually conducted an operation to clear the area.
