A wave of unrest swept through Dhaka’s Uttara on Tuesday (February 4) after three students—Akash, Robin, and Bappi—were detained by the police. The incident took place in the afternoon near Gausul Azam Avenue in Sector 13, where a student-led anti-discrimination meeting was being held.
Following the arrests, students mobilized and initially surrounded the Uttara East Police Station, demanding the release of their peers. As the situation intensified, the protestors moved to the Uttara West Police Station around 7 PM and engaged in a violent confrontation with the police. During the altercation, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Mahadev was reportedly assaulted.
According to the students, their detained peers were being held at Uttara East Police Station. However, reports indicate that the three were initially detained by Uttara West police before being transferred to Uttara East’s custody. Frustrated by this, the protesting students resorted to pelting stones and attacking the gate of Uttara West Police Station.
Multiple police sources confirmed the attack. Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Uttara Division Rownak Jahan acknowledged the incident while addressing the protesting students. As tensions escalated, senior police officials, including DC Rownak Jahan, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Ahmed Ali, and Assistant Commissioner Saddam Hossain, arrived at the scene to defuse the situation.
Eventually, a dialogue was initiated between police officials and student representatives inside the computer lab room of Uttara East Police Station. Following assurances from the police, the students decided to suspend their protest, bringing a temporary halt to the unrest. The situation remains under close observation to prevent further escalation.
