Students protesting for the transformation of Government Titumir College into a university have rejected the recent statement made by the Education Advisor and warned of escalating their movement.

On Sunday afternoon, Abdul Hamid, a protesting student from the Political Science Department of Titumir College, told the media that the advisor’s statement was contradictory and unacceptable. He asserted that the students would continue their protests with even greater intensity.

Earlier in the day, during a press briefing at his office following an Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) meeting at the Planning Commission, Education and Planning Advisor Dr. Wahiduddin Mahmud addressed the ongoing movement. He stated that a government-formed committee was working on establishing an independent university for Titumir College and six other affiliated institutions. However, he argued that setting a deadline for declaring Titumir College a university was not reasonable.

The advisor further added that the government could not hastily establish a university simply to meet student demands and pass on the financial burden to future administrations.

For the fifth consecutive day, students of Titumir College continued their hunger strike, demanding the institution’s transformation into a university. Alongside this, they called for the introduction of Journalism and Law departments at the college.

The protesters insisted that honors courses in these two new departments be launched from the 2024-25 academic year, reaffirming their determination to continue their movement until their demands were met.
