In a groundbreaking move to assist litigants and service seekers, Chief Justice Dr. Syed Refaat Ahmed launched the Supreme Court helpline on September 25. In just two months, the helpline (01316154216) has received 723 calls, providing a range of services including legal advice, case-related information, and complaint handling.
According to Md. Shafiqul Islam, Public Relations Officer of the Appellate Division, the helpline has successfully addressed 426 calls related to legal advice and 243 calls for case information. Additionally, 42 calls were related to complaints about irregularities, negligence, delays in service, and corruption, for which necessary legal actions have been taken.
Senior advocate Barrister Salauddin Dolon lauded the initiative, describing it as timely and transformative. "It significantly reduces harassment for service seekers and enhances the image of the highest court. With various reforms, including a judicial roadmap, we are hopeful for an independent and efficient judiciary," he added.
The helpline operates under the supervision of an assistant registrar or higher-ranking judicial officer, ensuring seamless support for service seekers. It remains active from Sunday to Thursday, 10 AM to 4 PM, excluding public holidays.
This initiative aligns with the Chief Justice's 12-point directive aimed at enhancing transparency, accountability, and efficiency among court officials. Key aspects of the directive include prompt service delivery, elimination of unnecessary delays, prohibition of financial transactions during service delivery, compassionate behavior towards service seekers, and stringent measures against irregularities and corruption.
By launching the helpline, the Supreme Court aims to ensure smoother service delivery, minimize barriers for litigants, and uphold the judiciary's integrity and accessibility.
