The Supreme Court of Bangladesh has upheld the High Court's ruling to dismiss five labor law cases filed against Nobel Laureate and former Chief Advisor to the caretaker government, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus.
On Sunday, December 8, a three-member bench of the Appellate Division, led by Justice Md. Ashfaqul Islam, rejected the state’s appeal to reinstate the cases, affirming the High Court’s earlier decision. Senior lawyer Barrister Mustafizur Rahman Khan represented Dr. Yunus in court, while Additional Attorney General Anik R. Haque appeared for the state.
This judgment confirms the High Court's ruling, effectively nullifying the five labor law cases filed against Dr. Yunus. According to Dr. Yunus's legal team, the Supreme Court’s order has put an end to the legal proceedings in these cases.
The labor law cases originated in 2019 when Dr. Yunus served as the Chairman of Grameen Telecom. Three former employees of the organization—Abdus Salam, Shah Alam, and Emranul Haque—lodged complaints on July 3, 2019, alleging wrongful termination of their employment following disputes related to a proposed trade union. Subsequently, two more employees, Hossain Ahmed and Abdur Gafur, filed similar complaints.
In response to the legal actions, Dr. Yunus filed an appeal in 2020, seeking the dismissal of the cases. The High Court subsequently issued a rule questioning the validity of the cases. After thorough hearings, the High Court delivered its verdict on October 24, 2024, dismissing the proceedings of the five labor law cases and an additional defamation case.
The Appellate Division’s decision to uphold the High Court ruling has been seen as a significant legal victory for Dr. Yunus, bringing closure to a protracted legal battle surrounding his tenure as Chairman of Grameen Telecom.
