On January 23, 2025, Tarik Rahman, the acting chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), articulated that the primary objective of the mass uprising was to transition from autocracy to democracy. He highlighted the need for multi-party political activities, the expression of diverse opinions, and the restoration of citizens' freedoms in a statement released to the media on the occasion of the historic Mass Uprising Day.In his message, Rahman paid deep respects to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the 1969 mass movement and other democratic movements throughout history. He expressed his hopes for their souls to find peace. He noted that January 24 holds a significant place in national history as it marks a day when students and citizens united against the oppressive rule of the then Pakistani colonial regime. This resistance escalated into a mass uprising that ultimately led to the downfall of military dictatorship and paved the way for Bangladesh's independence.Rahman emphasized that the essence of the 1969 mass uprising was to restore democracy from tyranny, promote multi-party political engagement, encourage diverse thoughts and ideas, and reclaim citizens' rights. He remarked on the profound significance of this uprising in shaping national life and called upon all citizens to work together to ensure freedom, sovereignty, democracy, and fundamental human rights.As a leader of BNP, Rahman urged unity among the people to confront contemporary challenges and reaffirmed his commitment to uphold democratic values in Bangladesh.
